Spring is here, the Sun is shining, and the Birds are singing!
There is just something about spring that makes you want to clean and organize. Keeping a home in good working order is more than just sweeping and dusting.
Below are some tips and tricks to help you prepare for your “Spring Clean”
OUTSIDE
Eavestrough
If you are not comfortable with climbing on a ladder and cleaning the gutters yourself, we can help you find a professional who will assist you. If you are able to do it yourself, we highly suggest wearing gloves. Use your hands for the first “sweep” and remove as much of the debris as you can. Once that is done, you can use your hose to spray and wash away the smaller debris. Make sure that your eavestrough drains in a safe location, at least 5 feet away from your foundation.
Exterior Windows
Everyone cleans the inside of their windows, but how often does the outside get a good scrub? A window cleaning service is usually the best way to go about this, as they have the proper training and equipment.
Foundation Vents/Window Well
It is a good idea to take a walk along the perimeter of the building, and clear away any leaves, sticks or other debris that has built up over the winter. Over the winter, snow, leaves, sticks and debris can build up along the sides of the home and cause blockage in window wells, around vents and garden beds.
Gardens
Gardens and landscaping are highly underrated when it comes to home maintenance. Having the right garden can enhance not only your pleasure, but the value of your home. Be sure to check if there are any underground wires before you start digging.
INSIDE
Dryer vent
Everyone knows to clean out the lint trap inside the machine, but did you know there is a trap at the back as well? To prevent fires, disconnect the vent from the back of the dryer and clean away any lint. Outside of the house, remove the vent cover and brush away the lint lingering on the vent. The dryer vent flap should then move freely.
Faucets and Showerheads
Use a solution of vinegar and water to soak all the shower heads and faucets for an hour. If it is a removable head, remove and soak in water. If not removable, simply pour the solution into a ziploc baggie and use an elastic to secure it on the head.
Replace Filters
Filters typically need to be replaced around the 6 month mark on most range hoods along with air and water filters.
Smoke alarms
It is a great idea to check your smoke alarms and Carbon Monoxide detectors on a regular basis, and spring cleaning is a great time to remember.
Outlets and walls
Walls, baseboards and outlets are typically one of the last things we think of when it comes to cleaning. These can actually hold a lot of dust, which can aggravate allergies. Use your vacuum to clean dust from the outlets. Washing the walls and baseboards in the spring with water or a water/vinegar mix will keep your walls sparkling, and you will breathe easier.
